Laser welding technology is a relatively new joining technique that uses a focused laser beam as the heat source. The high energy density of the laser beam produces narrow and deep weld penetration, high welding speeds, low heat input, and minimal distortion. The non-contact operation reduces tool wear. Laser welding can join almost all types of metallic materials. Based on different energy densities, laser welding can be classified into heat conduction welding and keyhole (deep penetration) welding. CO₂ lasers, solid-state lasers, and semiconductor lasers can all be used for laser welding.
Laser welding is mainly used in the following industries: metal products, general-purpose and special-purpose equipment, automotive, rail transit equipment, ships, aviation and aerospace, and electrical machinery and equipment.
Laser welding also requires shielding gas, and depending on the materials being welded and the component structure, mixed gases are often used for protection. Due to the wide variety of material types, mixed gases with special additives are increasingly being used in laser welding.
